BRIEF ITINERARY

Day 1, KOTA KINABALU: Arrive and check in to hotel. No meals.

Day 2, KOTA KINABALU - MIKI'S SURVIVAL CAMP: Drive to Kiau, a traditional village in a spectacular setting in the foothills of Mt. Kinabalu. On arrival we hike through the jungle, accompanied by a local jungle survival guide, enjoying superb views of the surrounding scenery and abundant flora and fauna. Our guide will teach us how to survive in the jungle and we spend the night at a remote camp. (BLD)

Day 3, KIAU VILLAGE: Morning hike out of the jungle to Kiau where we spend the night with the local villagers, gaining a unique insight into their way of life. (BLD)

Day 4, KIAU VILLAGE - MT KINABALU: This morning we begin our ascent of Mt Kinabalu, South East Asia’s highest peak (4,101m). Along the way we have time to appreciate the remarkable profusion of exotic plants and spectacular views of the craggy granite summit. We spend the night in mountain hut accommodation at 3,300m. (B)

Day 5, MT KINABALU: Rise early to climb to the summit. The views from the top of Mt Kinabalu are breathtaking, with a sea of clouds and jungle spreading out beneath us. Later we descend to the foot of the mountain where we spend the night in a lodge. (D)

Day 6, MT KINABALU - PORING: A short drive takes us to Poring where we have the chance to take a long soak in the hot springs and revitalise some sore muscles. Later we climb into the rainforest canopy and follow canopy walkways with stunning views over the roof of the rainforest. There are a remarkable amount of birds and butterflies, and sometimes orang utans swing from the walkways. (BD)

Day 7, PORING - SUKAU - BATU PUTIH HOMESTAY: Morning drive through palm oil plantations and the rainforest to Sukau. We journey deep into the mangrove forest to a remote village where we spend two nights. This area offers unrivalled opportunities for birdwatching and we should see the the enormous hornbill. There are also large numbers of proboscis monkeys and gibbons. (BLD)

Day 8, BATU PUTIH HOMESTAY: A full day following trails through the forest to appreciate the local flora and fauna. (BLD)

Day 9, SEPILOK: Today we drive overland to Sepilok Jungle Resort, arriving in time for lunch. Afternoon visit to the world famous orang utan sanctuary with the chance to see these amazing ‘men of the forest’ being fed. Truly a highlight of any journey to Borneo. (B)

Day 10, PULAU TIGA: Morning flight departing Sandakan to Kota Kinabalu, transfer to Pulau Tiga. Situated 48km southwest of Kota Kinabalu, Pulau Tiga is the largest of the 3 islands that form the Pulau Tiga Park and is famous for its three mud volcanoes. Unlike many other offshore islands of Borneo, the vegetation on this island is practically untouched. (BD)

Day 11, PULAU TIGA: A full day of exploration. (BLD)

Day 12, PENAMPANG: We travel by boat to Kuala Penyu. On arrival we transfer to a Penampang, an idyllic stretch of coastline just outside Kota Kinabalu. We have two nights in a small beach hotel with time to relax, sunbathe or perhaps take a boat trip out to one of the outlying islands. (B)
